Help Us Bring Clean Water to Ilonde

Roots in Guinea-Bissau Cultural & Development Initiative is working to improve access to safe, reliable water for the community of Ilonde in Guinea-Bissau's Biobo District. A community assessment conducted in August 2026 identified approximately 1,200 residents living with significant water and sanitation challenges. The community currently relies on traditional hand-dug wells, with existing infrastructure reported as collapsing or nonfunctional. The primary water source is approximately one kilometer away, provides low-quality water requiring filtration, and is available only during the rainy season. The assessment also found no household latrines or handwashing facilities, further highlighting the community's need for improved infrastructure.

Through the Ilonde Clean Water Initiative, we plan to develop a solar-powered well that will provide a more dependable source of clean water closer to the families who rely on it every day. Reliable water access can reduce the daily burden of collecting water while supporting better hygiene, sanitation, health, and overall community well-being.
